Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
