Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
